Good value; same as all the others.
Ok, these are ceramic beads for keeping pastry down during blind-baking. They work good and one tub is just about enough for a 22cm (9") round tin. If you have any bigger tins or are do more than 1 at once...buy 2 (or more). Used them 10x so far...no problems. When the pie is done blind baking, I simply lift the beads out in the waxed oven paper into a heat proof dish (ususally a pot on the stove in my case) to cool. Once cooled (a few hours later) simply use the paper to funnel all the beads back into the tub and re-shelf for the next time. Simple.
No more puffy bases or shrinking
It took me a while to invest in proper pie weights as I was slightly sceptical that they work any better than dried beans but I'm glad I did. These pie weights do exactly what they are designed for - stop the pie crust and base from shrinking or puffing. I have found that these offer adequate cover for a 9" tin as others have stated. They do tend to stay very warm for a while after being removed from the oven so I leave them to cool for about 30 minutes before putting back in the plastic pot.
If you do a lot of pastry baking I would definitely recommend investing in these pie weights.
Gets hot
I enjoy baking, but always used uncooked rice for blind baking pastry. The down side of that is you have to throw the rice away at some point. However these beans are ceramic so hold down the grease proof paper and pastry very well. They are a bit heavy (not so that you cant lift it) so be careful around children as i dropped mine and it hurt my feet and chipped my tile floor a bit. No fault of the product. They are re usable but do get very hot so allow them to cool before you put them back in the container. I would buy some more if i needed to.
