I took out the bottom and washed the pieces separately. I reassembled them, as I thought, and tested it with water. It leaked. Turned bottom part over and re-tested, it still leaked. Then I put the spring form ring on work surface and opened the clip. I then dropped in the bottom and snapped the the outer ring onto it. It held together properly, and when tested again with water, it did not leak.
I have just made my Christmas cake and it has baked it perfectly - it does pay to buy quality items when you can afford it. I would recommend this tin and any from the same maker very highly.
