Wouldn't bother
I bought this after a recommendation from a wedding cake book. I made two 12" cakes, one with the core and one with a metal kebab stick pushed in to the middle of the cake. The one baked with the core was fine, but the bit of the cake cooked in the core was dry and it crumbled, making it difficult to fill in the hole. The one cooked with the kebab stick was moist and delicious and evenly cooked. Not sure I will bother using it again.

excellent product my 10 inch cakes now bake evenly and do not sink in the middle, fabulous. i regularly bake cakes and was at a loss to understand why my larger cakes always cooked too well on the outside and sunk in the middle. on trying the heating core my cakes are now perfect, evenly raised, and i would certainly not cook a 10 inch (and above) cake without the heating core. all you have to do is well oil the heating core both inside and out, place it in the middle of the cake tin and fill the tin with the mixture and the core up to 1/3 rd. then cook the cake. on removal from the oven let the cake cool, remove the core and gently extract the cake and the cake from the core and place in the hole left in the cake and cut to the correct depth. its as easy as that.

before using this heating core the middle of my cakes would always be undercooked whilst the edges of the cake would burn, this applied to 8inch and over madera sponge. since combining the heating core and the wilton baking strips there is no more worry ,lovely evenly cooked cakes thanks wilton a great combination x
