Christmas Pudding a la 'Beano' & 'Dandy'
Alan Silverwood Spherical Round Pudding Mould 6"
I bought this originally to produce Ice Cream Bombes but never got round to it. It does however make beautiful novely Christmas puddings. We all saw the globe shaped Christmas Puddings in kids' comics: the ones with the 'snow' topping and a piece of holly stuck in it. It took a little trial and error to decide how much mixture was needed. I totally filled the mould for the first one I made. Have you ever seen a raisin sqeeze its way out of a sealed mould? The crafty little things can you know.
These puddings have now become a firm favourites as presents to friends and family. I'm not sure if it is the novelty of the shape or soaking the dried fruit in Brandy until its all absorbed. Did you know that raisins can treble in size when they go on a bender?
The puddings from the...

This product doesn't work for cakes
I bought this cake tin after reading 2 very favourable reviews. One says it's great for Christmas puddings, the other that it's great and simple to use.

I needed to make 2 spherical cakes. I did two practice runs, neither of which was good. One ended up in a perfect half sphere with a dented half sphere joined to it. The other cake only reached half mast and looked like a meteor had caused a crater.

In both cases, I followed the recipe but the instructions are unclear - cook in total for 35 minutes or turn after 35 minutes? This aspect needs clarification. Also, it simply states "flour" I used plain and the cake itself tasted delicious however.

I initially thought it may be my Aga-type oven to blame as it does not bake in quite the same way. Not so, my friends regular oven was no good either. We tried all permutations and nothing worked.

When I got in touch with the firm, the chap I emailed did several practice runs and was good...

Works for cakes too
I read some harsh reviews about the effectiveness of this spherical tin for baking cakes. I looked round the internet and found an American site that described how best to go about making it (bake in two halves), so bought it onthat basis. When I received the tin, it also had instructions on baking cakes in two halves, so the previous reviewers probably made the manufacturers aware of the problem, and they have now sorted out their instructions, which are now very clear and include a recipe (which I haven't yet tried).

As I'm using this as the upper part of a wedding cake for my son's forthcoming nuptuals, I decided to make life easy for my first practice attempt and made a Betty Crocker (box) marble cake. The box didn't contain sufficient batter for the two halves to make a nicely rounded cake, and it turned out more like a hamburger than a ball. However, it worked in terms of the cake being nicely baked. The cooking time suggested in the instructions (on the Betty...
